Dry biodiversity
Acid grasslands are nutrient-poor plant communities. In Northern Germany they have been established by extensive grazing or mowing schemes. Acid grassland can be found on the sandy soils of the Danevirke fortification, where rare species can find a suitable habitat. Despite the dry infertile soil and intense solar radiation, a diverse species rich plant community can be found. Because of this, acid grasslands are also very important for insects.
Maiden pink, spiny restharrow and downy oat-grass are characteristic plant species of this habitat, but other important plant species are several whin and clover species, sheep´s bit, bluebell and mouse-ear hawkweed. Acid grasslands, mat-grass and dwarf-shrub heath create a mosaic of an endangered habitat.
