Where history comes alive

The Danevirke defence system and the former trading site Hedeby are among the most significant archaeological sites in Northern Europe. The combination of man-made structures, prime location and beautiful nature imparts a unique atmosphere to these places. For this reason, the sites were granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2018.

The erstwhile defence system and the former trading centre are worth a visit to get a feel for that time. The museums at the World Heritage Site Hedeby and the Danevirke allow visitors to get a glance into the past as if through a window and experience local history up close.
