Hillfort

Hedeby’s Hillfort

Can you see the low rampart surrounding the plateau on this promontory? This «hillfort» probably served as a refuge for the town’s inhabitants. Later, Hedeby was protected by its own ramparts. Inside the ramparts there are more than 70 burial mounds, which are now hardly visible. These date back to the early Viking Age or even before.
