Hedeby's Hillfort

Can you see the low embankment surrounding the plateau on this spur of land? This “hillfort” probably served as a refuge for the town’s inhabitants. Later, Hedeby was protected by its own ramparts. Within the embankment there are more than 70 burial mounds, which are now hardly visible. These date back to the early Viking Age or even before.
